I Love Dick is Dope.
I was sick in bed this week, which is always a drag, except it gave me a chance to watch (again) season one of the Amazon series I Love Dick.
This show, based on a 1997 autobiographical novel by artist Chris Kraus, finds the author exploring her life¾and her marriage¾via obsessive letters she writes to another man.
It sounds complicated. And it is, psychologically and emotionally, but not narratively (once you get the basic premise). The series was created by Jill Soloway of Transparent fame. The storytelling is suspenseful, funny, and mesmerizing.
What I love most about this series that female desire—for status, artistic opportunity, power, and, yes, sex—is explored with such rawness, honesty and comprehensiveness. More so that I think I’ve ever seen on TV.
Soloway has said this show is an exploration of the female gaze.
I totally agree.
If you have not seen this show yet, I urge you artistic take a peek.
